An altercation Wednesday evening in Saint John left one man dead and another facing a charge of manslaughter.

Police responded to a home on Norris Road, in the city’s east end, shortly after 9 p.m. after a report of a violent encounter.

Scott Bennett, 32, was taken to hospital, where he later died from his wounds.

Police say he was stabbed.

“Three people, persons of interest were located in the residence,” said Saint John police spokeswoman Sgt. Lori Magee..

“They were arrested and transported to the police station where they’ve been questioned,” she said.

Two of the three men have since been released, while the other — 18-year-old Justin Bennett — appeared in court on Thursday to face a charge of manslaughter.

He is the victim’s nephew.

Neighbours were surprised to learn about the altercation in what they describe as an otherwise sleepy corner of the city.

“We’ve been here since 2000 and no activity of that sort around here,” said Harold Crowell, who lives nearby.

“It think it’s either a family issue or some other issues and I don’t think it’s really going to affect people around here, other than the surprise and the disappointment in a quiet area,” he said.

Neighbour Mike Kirkpatrick said the neighbourhood is a quiet one.

“So to hear something like that happens, it’s pretty shocking,” he said.

Justin Bennett is scheduled to appear again in court on Monday morning.
