Some very anxious moments at the region's largest airport Tuesday night when a large American jet came in for an emergency landing.

United airlines flight 999 had left New York and was headed for Europe when a small fire broke out in the galley of the Boeing 777.

The plane diverted to Halifax and landed safely around 9:20 P.M.

Crew members used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames.

There were 293 passengers and 13 crew members on board.

Nobody was injured and emergency crews were on standby when the big plane came in.

The airline is still sorting out whether passengers will spend the night in Halifax or continue on their journey.

 The investigation is ongoing.
