A building at one of Halifax Regional Municipality’s new all-weather sports fields has been damaged in a fire that may have been deliberately set.

Fire crews were called to the scene at Forest Hills Parkway and Auburn Drive around 2:30 a.m., where the structure was fully engulfed in flames.

Cole Harbour RCMP and a canine unit attended the scene as firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Officers are treated the incident as arson.

"It's disappointing,” said Ryan Francis of Sport Nova Scotia. “Sport has such a positive impact on people's lives that participate in it, so when setbacks like this occur, one might not think that it's a big deal but this ultimately affects the ability for someone to participate in sport."

The field was being renovated as part of a new, $3.9 million facility that will have several functions.

"It would help support the field operations by having that office space, equipment storage and of course, public washrooms as well for people that are both playing there and spectators," said Tiffany Chase, spokesperson for the HRM.

Cole Harbour's all-weather sports field is slated to open in spring. Officials say a trailer will be on site if for some reason the building is not ready in time.

Anyone with information on the fire is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
