HALIFAX _ A national bank says about a dozen of its customers' debit cards were compromised while making payments at a Halifax-area retailer.

CIBC spokesman Kevin Dove says the bank has contacted any clients who may have used their cards at the store and offered to replace the cards as a precaution.

He says the bank has reimbursed those who have had funds withdrawn from their accounts.

Dove says in an email he believed holders of other bank debit cards may have been impacted, but he could not specify the names of those institutions or the number of people affected.

The bank spokesman referred further questions on timing and location of the incidents to police.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Greg Church says police are investigating two cases of theft of debit card information over the past week, but cannot confirm if they are the same incidents as those reported by CIBC.

Church advises the public not to share PIN numbers and to monitor all transactions to ensure there are no irregularities.
