After an extensive search, Codiac RCMP said they did not find a man with a weapon in a neighbourhood in northern Moncton.

Police received a call around 11:15 a.m. Sunday that a man was walking down Katherine Avenue with what appeared to be a firearm.

Armed police officers set up blockades and canvassed homes in the area for several hours as they investigated the complaint.

Police said there were no further sightings of the suspect and the blockades have since been removed.

But the scene reignited horrible memories for many Moncton residents, including Claire Prevost, who has family in the area where police were canvassing.

“There is families there. Somebody is going to get hurt and my daughter and the little one included and I also have other family that live in that area,” said Prevost.

“The RCMP definitely are not taking it lightly and they won’t ever again, due to the occurrences that happened in June, the tragic incident,” said Jeremy Beaulieu.

The area was not locked down; people could come and go, but police tried to minimize traffic so they could focus on the investigation.

One of the recommendations from the review of the fatal shootings of three RCMP officers in Moncton in June was an encrypted communications system so that citizens could not listen to the scanner and post details of events as they happen.

The incident remains under investigation.

Police said the caller described the suspect as a young man, possibly in his late teens. He is of average height and a slim build. He was wearing dark-coloured pants, a grey-coloured jacket with red stripes on the sleeves, and a dark-coloured toque.

The RCMP are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
