Codiac RCMP are investigating after a woman's body was found in the Petitcodiac River in Moncton.

Sgt. André Pepin responded to an area behind the Chateau Moncton hotel around 8 a.m. Sunday after receiving two separate calls about a body floating in the water.

One of those calls was from someone walking on the trail behind the hotel.

“The body was in the mud, but the tide happened to come at the same time,” said Sgt. Pepin. “It pushed the body towards Riverview, and Riverview was able to pick up the body at that time.”

Sgt. Pepin said the remains were recovered downriver near the Moncton Law Courts nearly 40 minutes later.

He said the woman has not been identified but is believed to be in her late 50s or 60s. RCMP say the victim was not carrying identification and does not match any missing person reports in the area.

“RCMP are now asking for anyone with information about a woman in her 50s or 60s who hasn't been seen for several days to come forward to help with the identification process,” said Sgt. Pepin.

Police do not believe the body was in the water for very long and will treat the death as suspicious until a cause of death has been determined.

The remains will be kept at the Moncton hospital.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
