A Cape Breton comedy trio is back with another music video spoofing local culture, this time it's the area's annual heavy garbage pickup.

Magic Ranch’s latest video spoofs a Cape Breton springtime ritual, the annual heavy garbage pickup.

“Heavy duty pickup is an iconic time in Cape Breton, it's like Cape Breton Christmas,” says comedian Daryl Babstock.

The three comedians play the role of scavengers, people who spend countless hours sifting through the trash curbside in hopes of finding treasure.

“There's real life people who go around collecting the garbage,” says comedian Greg Vardy. “So we have taken that role in our video and it kind of hits close to home.”

The group says they are not so different from the people they're portraying, which is one of many reasons their humour is a hit.

“Our characters are just exaggerations of the typical Cape Bretoner,” says Babstock. “I think that's why people can laugh at it, because they kind of see themselves.”

The group’s first foray into viral videos came when they spoofed the popular song ‘Let Me Take a Selfie’ by American DJ duo The Chainsmokers.

The ‘Cape Breton Selfie’ song was been played on radio stations around Cape Breton and became a huge hit on the island, getting more than 126,000 YouTube views.

In just a few days, the heavy garbage spoof has more than 10,000.

Success that has the group hoping their homegrown hijinks will lead to bigger things.

“We've been doing all these videos and getting great feedback,” says comedian Justine Williamson. “So we want to take it a step up. We want to do some collaborations with some great Cape Breton talent, possibly score a web series, or a tv show.”

The recipe for a hit is simple - the group says they just spoof whatever happens to be the latest talking point in the community.

“It was something different for us to do and we just knew it was going to be a hit the whole time,” says Vardy.

They say it's all in good fun and thousands of YouTube hits suggest many agree.
