A Cape Breton man was taken into police custody after he took his protest over the snow crab fishery to the roof of CTV Atlantic in Halifax.

Paul Fraser of New Waterford, N.S. climbed onto the roof Wednesday morning and held up a sign reading, “I want the minister of fisheries and oceans to review my snow crab proposal.”

Fraser told CTV Atlantic that he has been trying to get the federal government to listen to his snow crab plan for years, and he wants a meeting with federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister Dominic LeBlanc to discuss the matter.

Police responded to the scene around 8:30 a.m. They urged Fraser to come down for safety reasons and warned him that he could face charges.

Officers negotiated with the 56-year-old to eventually come down from the roof around 4 p.m. He was arrested without incident and remains in custody.

Police anticipate he will be released Wednesday evening.

Fraser has protested in Cape Breton before, but says he chose to drive to Halifax because he feels he’s more likely to be heard there.

He is scheduled to appear in court at a later date, with one of the conditions to abstain from going on the rooftop of any building he doesn’t own.
