A woman is upset after her son discovered what appears to be part of a knife blade inside a cookie from a Sobeys in North Sydney.

Lesley Ross says her routine trip for groceries turned out to be anything but for her and her family after purchasing the store made cookies.

“The kids had a few of them,” says Ross. “It was around 10 at night when my oldest son, who is 15, found, and actually pulled out of his mouth, the tip of a blade.”

Ross says she had to ask the manager of the Sobeys bakery twice before she could confirm that it was the tip of one of their knives. The blade was an inch long.

A Sobeys Corporate Headquarters spokesperson says they are taking this incident very seriously.

“We are thankful no one was hurt,” says the spokespersonin an email. “When Ms. Ross contacted the store, they immediately contacted our food and safety team, who then conducted a thorough investigation and confirmed that this was an isolated accident. They have followed up with all of the bakery employees to reinforce our food safety policies and procedures.”

Ross was given a $20 gift card and a free package of cookies, but that’s not what she wanted.

“An apology, a sincere apology, a sorry might have been thrown in there,” says Ross. “But not a ‘oh my goodness, I’m so sorry’ apology though.”

As a result of the incident, Ross says she thought about buying her groceries at a nearby competitor in the future. She will continue to shop at Sobeys, but will not purchase any more baked goods.

“I have an 11-month-old, and it was the very first day I gave him a cookie,” says Ross. “Luckily, it wasn’t the one he got.”
