‘Selfie’ was Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year in 2013. Love them or hate them, selfies are getting more popular every day.

The picture-taking trend inspired the popular song ‘Let Me Take a Selfie’ by American DJ duo The Chainsmokers. Now, a group of friends from Glace Bay is getting a lot of attention after putting a local twist on the tune.

“We got all our friends together and we really tried to make it Cape Breton,” says amateur actor Greg Vardy. “We have some hockey jerseys, fisherman hats and we danced around the bar.”

The ‘Cape Breton Selfie’ song has been played on radio stations around Cape Breton and has become a huge hit on the island.

“This selfie song has gone viral,” says video creator Justine Williamson. “My phone won’t stop going off with Twitter retweets, Facebook notifications, so it’s pretty huge.”

Williamson says she has been making videos for the last few years and now has her own YouTube channel called The Magic Ranch.

“I’ve been making YouTube videos since I was 16,” says Williamson. “In high school, I got a lot of flack from that and got made fun of, but I kept doing it because I love to entertain.”

People who want to be part of the video have been taking selfies and sending them in. The pictures have been piling up.

“We asked everyone to send in photos and were surprised with how many people actually sent photos in,” says amateur actor Daryl Babstock.

Williamson says growing up around people who love to laugh, and have fun, is part of the reason she loves to entertain.

“Because of where I come from, whenever we get together as a family, all we do is tell jokes and laugh,” says Williamson.

“So, to be able to channel that online and get feedback is pretty cool.”
