A Nova Scotia animal rescue group is offering a cash reward for information that helps them track down the mother of a litter of puppies left for dead in Sydney.

Six puppies had been placed inside a garbage bag and tossed into a swampy ditch in the area. Two teens made the startling discovery as they walked home from a hockey game Friday evening.

One of the puppies died but five others are being nursed back to health at a special-care facility in Bedford.

Litters ‘n Critters says it is very concerned about the mother's well-being and is gathering donations online in the hopes a cash reward will prompt someone to come forward with information about her and her owner.

They say the reward total has already topped $1,200.

Meanwhile, SPCA animal cruelty officers and Cape Breton Regional Police are looking for the driver of a light blue truck spotted leaving the scene.

“We’re working together essentially, assisting the SPCA with this investigation,’ says Cape Breton Regional Police spokeswoman Desiree Vassallo.

“Generally, complaints of animal cruelty are handled by the SPCA but police do assist when our help is requested, and, in this case, we are working with the SPCA.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cape Breton Regional Police or the SPCA.
