Nathan MacKinnon, the second National Hockey League player to come from Cole Harbour, is lighting up the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

MacKinnon obtained seven points in two games, including his first NHL post-season goal Saturday night.

The playoff rookie has been the talk of the hockey world.

Jon Greenwood coached MacKinnon at the Bantam level and at the Maritime Hockey Academy.

He says he isn’t surprised in the player’s success.

“I’m done being surprised by what he does anymore,” says Greenwood. “A lot of people are surprised, I’m not. He’s excelled at every level growing up; you think the NHL is the level that he’ll level out.”

During the regular season MacKinnon had 63 points, including 24 goals.

“To watch him do things on the ice against the best players in the world, it’s amazing,” exclaims Greenwood.

“His composure, the way that he handles himself on the ice, nothing bothers him,” says Eric Jobin of the Atlantic Hockey Group. “On the ice he’s playing his game and he’s having so much fun.”

The Nova Scotia native is also the talk of a rink in Bedford.

“He’s doing good!”

Brandon Robichaud is a Sidney Crosby fan, but the 11-year-old says he’s impressed by MacKinnon.

“He’s awesome.”

Currently, Nathan MacKinnon is the most searched player on the popular website Hockeydb.com.

A new shingle may soon have to be added to the Cole Harbour welcome sign that says home of Sidney Crosby.
