It was standing room only after hundreds of people attended a public meeting Monday evening over a proposed asphalt plant near Halifax.

Company Scotian Materials is looking at building a permanent asphalt plant in Tantallon.

Included in the proposal, the company is also requesting the city to amend a land use by-law.

Residents opposing the project fear it will create pollution, noise, smells and spoil wilderness areas.

Monday’s meeting was an opportunity for the company to share its plan, and for the community to express their concerns.

“I think people do not approve of the idea of the area being re-zoned,” said resident Jean-Marc Nicolas. “They think that it’s opening the door to industrial development, but I think people came here to get more information.”

“The fact is, when plants like this are too close to a neighbourhood, problems always arise.” adds resident Ryan MacFarlane.

The company’s president says they will address concerns and hopefully put them to rest, but if they can’t, they won’t go ahead with the project.

Feedback from the meeting will go to Halifax Regional Council, which will have the final say in the proposal.
