Crews were battling several wildfires in wooded areas throughout the Nova Scotia on Tuesday, the provincial government said.

The province said the largest was burning in Fenwick, just south of Amherst, and was approximately 12 hectares in size.

Spokesman Brian Taylor said that fire was contained and more than 50 crew members were working to extinguish the blaze Tuesday afternoon.

Taylor said another fire, one hectare in size, was burning in Lunenburg County, but it was also contained.

As well, crews were setting up sprinklers to deal with a blaze burning over half a hectare in Clarksville, roughly 30 kilometres northeast of Windsor.

Natural Resources Minister Lloyd Hines said wildfires are not unusual in the province -- as Nova Scotia can experience up to 300 a year -- but having multiple fires spread out over a distance can be challenging.

"It's a nightmare when we have two or three that are spaced out over a greater distance because it spreads the resources," said Hines. "It's not that unusual to have three (at one time), but it can be a bit of a nightmare scenario."

However, Hines reiterated that the wildfires that were burning across the province Tuesday were under control and there was no threat.

Dry conditions have prompted the province to ban all burning and campfires on mainland Nova Scotia.

The government has also issued a ban on consumer fireworks -- the outdoor, low-altitude, recreational fireworks sold by retail outlets. The restriction does not apply to event-related fireworks if they are done in consultation with a fire department.
