Like many kids her age, six-year-old Katherine Simpson loves all things Disney.

She recently got to experience Walt Disney World first hand, something her parents didn’t think would ever happen.

“We felt that a family vacation would be next to impossible for Lisa and I given Katherine’s challenges and the medical equipment and the medication and all of the support she needs 24/7,” says Katherine’s father Peter Simpson.

Katherine was born with a chromosome imbalance. Her father says there isn’t much information about her rare condition or the effect it will have on her life.

“Nobody can tell us if she’s going to live a long and healthy life so we didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity for a family vacation,” he tells CTV News.

The Simpsons’ Disney trip was made possible by Children’s Wish Foundation.

Katherine was one of the first kids in Nova Scotia to have her wish granted through the More Wishes, More Wonders campaign.

“The More Wishes, More Wonders campaign has enabled us to expand the children we grant wishes to,” says Patricia Bishara of Children’s Wish.

The campaign is raising money to grant wishes for kids like Katherine living with severe neurological or genetic illnesses.

“It’s a national campaign,” says Bishara. “We’re raising $10-million and here in Nova Scotia we’re raising $2-million.”

“You hear that these wish trips are fantastic, but until you’re actually on that trip and experiencing it, you can’t even imagine the amount of joy such a thing will bring you,” says Lisa Simpson, Katherine’s mom.

Katherine’s parents say while she  is a happy kid, she doesn’t always smile or show excitement.

That changed dramatically on the It’s a Small World ride.

“When we first turned the corner and all the music is playing and the dolls are dancing and the lights are flashing, Katherine just started beaming a smile ear to ear and what we call it, she was laughing her head off,” says Peter. “She was just so happy.”

“That was the first time we really realized why she was smiling,” adds Lisa. “She loved the ride and she was thrilled to be there.”
