Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a 47-year-old Dartmouth man was found unconscious in a jail cell Monday evening.

Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of an intoxicated man at a Dartmouth address around 9:38 p.m.

Officers arrested the man and took him into custody at police headquarters around 10:15 p.m.

Police say staff were conducting a routine check when they found the man in critical condition in his cell at 10:42 p.m.

SIRT says it appears the man’s injuries were self-inflicted.

The man received first aid at the scene and was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, where he remains in serious condition.

Police say his condition is believed to be life-threatening.

The case has been turned over to SIRT, which is response for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing.
