HALIFAX – Six people were taken to hospital early Saturday morning after a third-storey residential deck collapsed onto a second-storey deck with people on it.

Residents like Alex Rose say the incident left a gruesome sight.

"I saw someone lying on our deck," he says. "I saw someone lying on our driveway. I just saw people lying on the ground and other people helping them."

Police say Halifax fire and ambulance services were called to a home on Brussels Street around 2 a.m. They say seven people were on the third-storey deck when it collapsed. It is not known how many people were standing on the second-storey deck.

"It was a pretty chaotic scene when first responders arrived," says Nancy Rudback from Halifax Regional police.

Five people were driven to hospital by ambulance with serious, but non life-threatening injuries.  A sixth person drove themselves to the hospital.

Paul Pettipas from the Nova Scotia Home Builders Association says this type of deck is the most dangeround kind.

"It's what we call free standing," he says. "So there's no posts coming down. It's sort of like there's beams coming out from the house."

A search warrant was executed to complete the investigation.  Police have not said what caused the collapse.

As of Sunday morning, police are no longer on scene and tenants are allowed to return.

Police say they will continue to investigate this incident along with other municipal officials.
