After going public about their desperate need for donations, officials of the Glace Bay Food Bank say the community has delivered.

Workers at an area grocery store and volunteers spent much of Tuesday collecting food and monetary donations.

Customers and employees filled a police cruiser with more than $1,000 worth of non-perishable food items, while sales from a barbecue set up outside topped more than $500.

“The shelves are empty down at the Glace Bay Food Bank, so we all decided to get together,” said store manager Jamie Gove. “The community supports us all the time shopping here. We just want to give back to the community.”

The food bank will be holding a food drive on Saturday, with hopes of stocking the shelves for the winter months.
