BLOOMING POINT, P.E.I. - The Nature Conservancy of Canada says it is protecting 30 hectares of land at Deroche Pond on Prince Edward Island's north shore.

The organization says the site is just northeast of Blooming Point, an area popular for its beaches.

The protected land is known for its sand dunes and vegetation, and is also a nesting area for the Island's small breeding population of common loons.

The conservancy says the site has been a priority for conservation groups and the government for decades.

It will be designated under P.E.I.'s Natural Areas Protection Act.

The conservancy says it has helped to protect 130 hectares in that part of the province.
