Police in Nova Scotia have laid a murder charge after an Eskasoni man died following a serious assault early Saturday morning.

RCMP say 36-year-old Albert Michael Bernard of Eskasoni has been charged with second-degree murder.

He was arrested on Saturday several hours after RCMP responded to reports of a serious assault at the Eskasoni First Nation around 1:35 a.m. on Saturday, police say.

Another 36-year-old man from Eskasoni was seriously injured and taken to hospital by ambulance, RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alain LeBlanc said.

"On his way there (the victim) tragically succumbed to his injuries," LeBlanc said.

Police say the victim was in an altercation with a man who fled the scene on foot.

They believe the two men knew each other, and that the assault was not a random act.

Police say Bernard remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Sydney provincial court on Monday.

RCMP say their investigation is ongoing.
