SAINT JOHN, N.B. -- Six people remained in quarantine Wednesday night as the hazardous materials team in Saint John tested whether a powdery substance that leaked from a rail container is hazardous.

Geoff Britt, a spokesman for J.D. Irving, said the six people were staying indoors at NB Southern Railway's distribution centre.

He said an unknown, powdery substance was discovered at the site on Wednesday morning during a routine inspection of a container car.

The fire department's hazardous materials team spent the day running tests on the substance and more equipment was brought to the site Wednesday evening to do additional tests.

Britt said test results were expected late Wednesday night.

Police had said earlier in the day that five employees were in quarantine, but Britt said the correct figure is six.
