The Fredericton Police Force is investigating a possible case of sexual assault involving a 15-year-old girl and a taxi driver.

Police confirmed to CTV Atlantic that they have launched an official investigation into the complaint, but they wouldn’t say much else.

A source close to the investigation alleges the teen got into a taxi in downtown Fredericton and was touched inappropriately by the driver.

CTV Atlantic reached out to the four cab companies operating in Fredericton, but they wouldn’t confirm whether one of their drivers was under investigation.

One owner did say that if there is a complaint against a driver who has no history of complaints, who has been working for the company for more than two years, that person can keep taking fares until, or if, a charge is laid.

If there’s an investigation against someone with a previous history, even if no charge has been laid, that driver is taken off the road.

The same company said it is considering installing cameras in its cabs.

Police say they have handed the file to the Office of the Crown Prosecutor but neither the Crown nor the police would elaborate.
