Fredericton police are investigating the theft of three bronze plaques from the city’s downtown provincial cenotaph.

The thefts were reported Monday according to Alycia Bartlett, spokeswoman for the Fredericton Police Force.

Last week, police said a plaque valued at $3,000 was stolen from Fredericton’s Barker's Point cenotaph.

Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside said the city is offering a reward of $1,000 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the thefts.

“I’m sure that these were used for purposes of going to a junkyard and getting the money and that’s even more heartbreaking because there are names on there obviously, so we’re working tirelessly, our police force is working tirelessly, and I suspect in 24 hours we’ll have some announcements to make on the status on the investigation, where it goes from here,” said Woodside.

This isn’t the first time Fredericton’s downtown cenotaph has been disturbed. Vandals damaged the memorial just before Remembrance Day in 2009.
