Police now say a man who was found seriously injured in Fredericton Saturday morning was likely the victim of a serious assault.

Officers were called to the area of Douglas Avenue and Main Street around 4:30 a.m. They found a man who had sustained serious injuries and was unresponsive.

Peter Bryden, 46, remains in critical condition at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Police say Bryden had attended the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival Friday evening.

Police say they are investigating all possibilities but are actively pursuing information that Bryden was the victim of a serious assault.

"We have not ruled out the chances that it might have been an accidental fall or a motor vehicle accident, such as a fail to remain," says Staff Sgt. Matt Myers. "However, the vast majority of the information right now is leading us down the road of a serious assault."

Police say they want to hear from anyone who knows or saw anything related to the case, saying even minor details could help in their investigation.
