Nova Scotia's new NDP leader has no plans to run for a vacant seat in the legislature.

The riding of Halifax Needham is unrepresented following the resignation of long-serving NDP MLA Maureen MacDonald last month, who held the seat for 18 years.

MacDonald served as the party's interim leader before Gary Burrill was elected as leader this year.

Burrill says he doesn't think he needs a seat right away.

“I was elected leader of the party on a program of building and rebuilding our whole party through our 51 ridings, in this period before the general election which after all is very soon - six, 12, 18 months from now,” said Burrill.

Burrill says he will run in the next general election.

No date has been set for the general election or a by-election in Halifax Needham.
