Two German tourists and their dog are safe after becoming stranded on McNabs Island in Halifax Thursday evening.

Halifax District RCMP and Halifax Fire and Emergency were called to the island just before 8 p.m.

Police say the tourists, a 70-year-old man and a 40-year-old man, went to the island for the day to do some geocaching. The older man left a trail in the woods and became distressed when he was unable to negotiate his way back to the starting point.

He summoned the younger man, who was able to locate him, but was unable to help him out of the woods, police say.

The men then called police and provided the coordinates of their location.

Police and emergency crews managed to locate the men, but were unable to rescue them due to the difficult terrain. They contacted the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, who dispatched a helicopter to airlift the hikers to safety.

The rescuers, the hikers and their 11-week-old German Shepherd arrived at CFB Shearwater just before 11:30 p.m.

The older man was treated and released by Emergency Health Services personnel.
