A 16-year-old girl is facing charges in connection with a crash that claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy in Cape Breton.

Richmond County RCMP responded to the single-vehicle collision on Smith’s Road in Grand River on June 21.

Police say five of the vehicle’s six occupants, ranging in age from 13 to 22 years old, were injured in the crash but survived.

One passenger, Allan Lafford of the Potlotek First Nation, was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax where he passed away two days after the crash.

Police say the female driver has been charged with operating a motor vehicle with too many people in the vehicle, operating a motor vehicle while not having an experienced driver in the passenger seat, and driving in a careless and imprudent manner.

The teen, who cannot be named due to her age, is due to appear in Port Hawkesbury provincial court on Jan. 8 to enter a plea.
