Two 14-year-old girls are facing charges after allegedly bringing a replica gun to a school in the Chester, N.S. area.

Police responded to the school on Feb. 27 after receiving information that two students were in possession of what’s called an air-soft gun.

Officers seized the gun and arrested two teens. They are charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Air-soft guns are usually used in a sport where participants eliminate opponents by hitting each other with different materials, including plastic, aluminum, and biodegradable pellets.

"Although air-soft guns are meant for recreational purposes, bringing them into public places like a school is extremely concerning for police," said Lunenburg RCMP Staff Sgt. Jean-Guy Richard.

"Even from a short distance away, someone that's highly trained would have a hard time determining if an air-soft gun is a real weapon or not. We have to treat them as real weapons."

The teens were released from custody and are due to appear in Bridgewater provincial court on April 8.
