A Glace Bay, N.S. man is facing numerous charges, including attempted murder and sexual assault, after a serious domestic dispute in Cape Breton.

Thomas Barrett, 37, is accused of trying to strangle a woman to death. Police say the alleged attack took place Sunday in Glace Bay.

Barrett is facing a total of six charges which include attempted murder, attempt to strangle another person, sexual assault, forcible confinement, uttering death threats and assault.

He was arraigned in Sydney provincial court this morning.

“Mr. Barrett is charged with some very serious offences,” says Crown attorney Diane McGrath. “There are several public safety issues and concerns, so for that reason the Crown is opposed to his release.”

This is the second serious domestic dispute on the Island this month.

A 65-year-old man was charged with attempted murder and arson following an incident in the farming community of Millville earlier this month.

Rene Leo Gagne of MacKinnon’s Harbour is accused of repeatedly stabbing a 40-year-old woman before trying to burn down a house.
