A Halifax lawyer is joining a number of firms trying to sue Volkswagen in the ongoing diesel emissions scandal.

Lawyer Ray Wagner has filed a proposed class action lawsuit against Volkswagen and a number of its subsidiary companies.

“Their concerns are mostly that they bought a vehicle, they thought they were being environmentally conscience, they were buying a vehicle that was going to give them good gas mileage, and it turned out to be false,” said Wagner.

In September, the company admitted 11 million of its diesel vehicles contain software that evades emission testing.

A piece of equipment known as a defeat device was attached to Volkswagen vehicles and sold to dealers and customers.

Roughly 30 lawsuits have already been filed elsewhere in Canada and the United States.

So far, 12 people in Nova Scotia have joined the lawsuit.

The proposed class action still needs to be certified by the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.
