A recent surge in the number of attacks and robberies in a small portion of Halifax have prompted police to increase their presence in the area.
They began Nov. 7 when a group allegedly assaulted a man and stole his wallet near Maynard and Cunard Street.
Police were called to Gottingen Street 35 minutes later where another man was allegedly assaulted by a group.
Eight days later, a woman said she was attacked and robbed on Buddy Daye Street.
And early Sunday morning, a group of three suffered minor injuries when they were allegedly attacked and robbed by a group of 10 to 15 on Cogswell Street. Five minutes later, police were called up the road to Quinpool and Robie Street where a 23-year-old man was robbed.
Police say since the first two attacks, they’ve increased patrols in the area.
“We have marked vehicles that are attending the area. We're doing special checks as well as our plain clothes units such as our quick response are doing patrols of the areas,” said Halifax Regional Police spokeswoman Dianne Woodworth.
The five attacks in three weeks have left some Halifax residents on edge.
“My wife is really concerned now that we have a young one and another one on the way,” said resident Michael McKenzie. “You don't want to see these things happen, especially in a populated area.”
Police say there is no evidence of the incidents being connected, but it is something they are investigating because the cases are similar in nature.
“The incidents appear to be happening on weekends, early in the morning or late at night,” said Woodworth. “The group of suspects are larger and they seem to be targeting individuals or small groups of people and stealing property.”
Police say no arrests have been made. They are asking anyone with information to come forward.
