A potentially dangerous situation unfolded at a Halifax container terminal Thursday night.

The trouble started around 10 o’clock.

Fire officials say a container carrying uranium hexafluoride fell about 20 feet from a crane onto the deck of a container ship.

Uranium hexafluoride is a compound used the in production of fuel for nuclear reactors and weapons.

Hazmat teams spent several hours on the scene, along with emergency crews.

Officials initially said there was a radioactive leak because the situation was being treated as a worst case scenario.

After examining the container, it was determined there was no leak of radioactive material.

Workers were examined for exposure to radiation and released just after midnight.

Officials say there was no contamination, no injuries, and no evacuations.

The area surrounding the ship, Atlantic Companion, will remain closed off for the rest of morning as the investigation continues.
