Halifax Regional Police have identified the victim of a suspicious death in Dartmouth, and say the incident is being ruled a homicide.

Police have identified the victim as 20-year-old Joseph Douglas Cameron of Dartmouth. Those who knew Cameron say he spent time in Vancouver, but came home with plans to join the military.

“That's why he came back here, and was just cut-short on life,” said Steve Synnett, whose son was one of Cameron’s best friends. “Just like that. It's a damn shame."

The Synnett’s say Cameron was a “good kid” growing up and had a love for sports.

“He loves basketball,” said Sandra Synnett. “My son told me he used to go the basketball court, and he was always saying he was better than Kobe."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Cameron’s mother pay for funeral expenses.

Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Spring Avenue and Mount Edward Road around 5:20 a.m. Tuesday.

When officers arrived, they found Cameron’s body on the sidewalk. Police say he had been shot.

Police say an autopsy was conducted Tuesday and the medical examiner has ruled Cameron’s death a homicide.

No arrests have been made and the incident remains under investigation. Police were on scene for close to 12 hours on Tuesday examining the scene.

Police say Cameron is not known to them, but they don’t believe his death was a random incident.

Police are asking anyone with information about Cameron’s death to contact them.
