One of the officers injured in the fatal shooting of three Mounties eight weeks ago has spoken publicly for the first time.

Const. Eric Dubois, said Wedneday, that he is happy to be healthy again.

“You cannot imagine how fast I did heal from my injuries,” says Dubois. “You know, I’ve been injured in different places by the shrapnel.”

Dubois says without the prayers and support of the community, he would not have healed as quickly as he did.

Dubois, along with fellow Mounties and members of the community, participated in a golf tournament Wednesday, in memory of the three RCMP officers killed in the June shooting.

“The RCMP is a big family, but it’s not only the RCMP, but the community of Moncton, the Greater Moncton and the RCMP is a big family,” says Dubois.

The tournament took place in the Royal Oaks subdivision and was a great success. Unofficially, organizers say the tournament’s total surpasses records set by previous fund raising tournaments.

“This will be the largest fundraiser golf tournament to ever happen in Atlantic Canada,” says organizer George Bouchard.

The emotional wounds from the June 4 shootings still run deep and New Brunswick Premier David Alward says healing is a community effort.

“I think today is a really important day for healing,” says Alward. “A day to celebrate, as well, with the community and very importantly, what the RCMP mean to us and what they do each and every day.”

Const. Dubois says he is back to his routine patrolling the streets of Moncton. It is a job he loves, despite the dangers that come with it.

“Sometimes we have to put our life at risk, but that’s the choice that we make to make sure that when you wake up in the morning, the community is safe,” says Dubois.
