Five islands in eastern Prince Edward Island received some tender loving care this weekend.

Dozens of volunteers in tandem and sea kayaks, along with a canoe, travelled to five islands, Cherry, Thomas, Gordon, Herring and Reynolds, off the shore near Murray Harbour.

The clean-up was led by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, in an effort to protect the wildlife that lives in the area, including harbor seals, bald eagles and great blue herons.

Organizers say the project was a success.

One large dumpster and a pickup truck were filled with bags of garbage and marine litter, such as hundreds of buoys and three tires.

Four of the islands are owned by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Island Nature Trust and the provincial government.

The conservancy is trying to raise enough money to buy Thomas Island, from a private land owner for permanent conservation.
