With only a week remaining before the return of school, many Saint John parents are left unsure of where their children will be learning this year.

"The cleanup and bringing the desks back in and getting teachers lined up – we haven’t seen any of that yet," said parent Tracie Kennedy.

Lorne Middle School and Brown’s Flat Elementary were closed in June by the education minister.

But the parents later won the fight in court to have the decision reversed.

However, there still isn’t a definitive word from the mister of education that the two schools will open.

"Obviously we're concerned at this point because we haven’t gotten a statement from the minister and their stand at this point is that they're having the lawyers review the ruling from the judge," said Kennedy.

Minister Serge Rouselle said on Friday they would review the decision, but the judge ordering the closure said the school opening is a decision for the government, not the courts.

Kelly Lamrock is the lawyer for the parents who fought to keep the schools open. He says as far as he's concerned, it will be business as usual next week.

"The fact is there was a closure order that was quashed so there's no closure order, the law says the school stays open until it is legally closed,” he said. “This isn’t hard. If it's not closed, it must be open."

Parents say they’re getting concerned with the lack of movement from either school.

"They were certain in a hurry to empty the school out and they managed to get it empty in about two days, so I assume they can fill it up in two days," said Lamrock.

Until final word comes from the minister, parents say they will do what they can to enjoy the last week of summer before school starts - wherever that may be.
