Maritime Maple Leafs fans have a lot to cheer about, as rumours circulate that the Toronto hockey team will be back in our region for training camp.

A Toronto Sun article released Sunday stated the Leafs will return to Halifax for the second straight September.

Last year, long lines of fans sporting blue and white stood outside of the BMO Centre in Bedford waiting for a chance to see their beloved team.

“First day I got up at 5 a.m., went there for 5:30, parked a lawn chair, got in line and was one of the lucky ones to make it in that day,” says Amy Langdon, Leafs fan.

Langdon has been a Leafs fan for more than 20 years. She and other fans in the region are hoping they’ll get a second chance to see their favourite players.

“I seen Coach Babcock, and I seen Kadri, I seen pretty much all the guys,” says Langdon.

Despite the article, officials with the Leafs remain tight lipped about the status of the team’s return to the Maritimes.

“I'm afraid we cannot confirm our training camp information at this time. We do hope to make an announcement in the coming days though,” says Steve Keogh, the club’s director of media relations.

CTV News can confirm the Ottawa senators announced on their website Sunday that they will be playing the Toronto Maple Leafs in Halifax on Monday, September 26.

Leafs fan Andrew Pepper saw the teams face off about 10 years ago. He says he's hopeful his Leafs have turned a corner.

“I know we're still in a rebuild, I think it's been great that Shanahan has been upfront about it, but I think we're still a couple years off, but they're playing entertaining hockey,” says Pepper.

The Maple Leafs are expected to select highly regarded American prospect Auston Matthews at the NHL draft this Friday and the team’s farm system is already stocked with prospects like London Knights centreman Mitch Marner, providing some hope for a long-suffering fan base.

“We're expecting a huge year for the Maple Leafs,” says Brian Corless, sports store manager.

Corless says he is already looking forward to the sales associated with the training camp buzz, especially heading into the Leafs 100th anniversary season.

“It's all new, new product, new logo, everyone is waiting for that,” says Corless.
