HALIFAX - Four bidders remain in the running for the idled NewPage Port Hawkesbury paper mill in Cape Breton.

Court-appointed monitor Ernst & Young says the list of potential buyers has been reduced to "four entities" and talks with them have begun.

The monitor didn't reveal the names of the bidders.

The number of potential buyers of the closed mill started at 21 and has been whittled down.

Ernst & Young was appointed monitor in the case by the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia after NewPage applied for protection from its creditors in September under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act.

About 1,000 people lost their jobs after the company said it was losing money due to declining demand for its product and a strong Canadian dollar.
