Another landmark business in downtown Sydney, N.S., is calling it quits.

Jacobson’s Ladieswear has been a fixture on Charlotte Street for more than 75 years, but it will soon close. Prices are marked down and all remaining stock will be sold off in the next two months.

Theresa Campbell has been an employee at the store for 40 years.

“(It’s) a place I loved, loved to work in. I loved the customers,” she said.

Harry and Rachel Jacobson opened the clothing store in the 1940s. Over the years, the store has changed owners a number of times. Current owner Ahron Lang said business has declined.

Lang thought about closing last year, but wanted to wait and see if things would turn around.
“Unfortunately after a long and cold winter, we didn’t see any improvement at all, and saw a continued decline in traffic on the street. We decided four weeks ago we weren’t going to continue through the fall,” Lang said.

This is the second iconic business in Sydney’s downtown to close its doors in recent months, following the closure of Yazers Menswear. That business also operated for more than 70 years.

Business owner Bruce Meloney said with stores continuing to close in the area, it’s becoming more difficult for others to stay open.

“They were one of the reasons to come downtown, Jacobsons and Yazers,” he said. “When people are trying to decide where they’re going to shop, I think they’re going to end up saying maybe we’ll go somewhere else because there’s not as many (options) downtown.”

The liquidation sale begins Tuesday. There is no fixed date for closure yet, but the doors are expected to close at the end of June.
