One lucky hockey fan will walk away with more than $100,000 when the Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association makes their 50/50 draw on Sunday.

“Everybody is wanting in on the tickets and I know that because people are coming down and telling me ‘I normally sell x amount of tickets, I’ve already doubled that,’” says Glace Bay Minor Hockey officer manager Tracey Hanrahan.

“I can’t believe it. I’ve never gone through so many tickets. It’s just, everybody wants in.”

James Edwards has been the minor hockey president in Glace Bay for eight years. He has seen the draw grow each year.

“It’s unbelievable. It has taken on a life of its own,” says Edwards. “Everywhere I go and everywhere people from the minor community, it’s the talk of the town.”

Last year’s winner received a prize of over $90,000.

The 50/50 tickets have become so popular that they are being sold across Cape Breton Island.

Money generated from ticket sales allows the players to hit the ice for free.

“Covers the registration, covers, in many cases, equipment,” says Edwards. “We have professional coaching and skating instruction, goaltending instruction.”

The big draw will take place Sunday afternoon and Hanrahan will once again get to make the call to the winner - a moment she says she is looking forward to.

“I’m going to change someone’s life, so I can’t wait to see who the winner’s going to be.”
