A busy mall in Sydney, N.S. was evacuated Sunday afternoon after police say they received reports of threats.

Shoppers at the Mayflower Mall say they were shocked when they were told to evacuate.

“We just arrived but we heard it was a possible bomb threat,” says Theresa Miller.

Employees were also surprised.

“People outside the mall seemed pretty afraid,” says employee Chloe Rahey. “There were a lot of people running.”

Police say the threat was called in around 1:00 p.m. but the decision to lock down the mall wasn’t made until 3:00 p.m.

“In any of these situations, we have to look at if it’s credible or not,” says S/Sgt. Stephen MacKinnon.

Mall management says there were hundreds of shoppers and around 200 employees inside the mall at the time.

“We had a situation here where we felt that we had to make a judgment call to evacuate the mall,” says mall manager Greg Morrison.

Police won’t say whether or not they found anything inside the mall or whether there are any suspects in the case. No one was injured during the incident.

The mall was closed for about two hours but re-opened around 5:00 p.m.
