A man is facing several charges after he allegedly stole a cellphone and assaulted two police officers in Halifax.

Police say a man reported seeing his stolen cellphone advertised for sale on an online classified website. He alerted police and arranged to meet with the suspect to buy the phone.

Officers responded to the area of Kaye and Young streets around 1:30 p.m. Monday and located the suspect.

When the officers tried to arrest him, they say he resisted and began to fight. The officers managed to get the suspect on the ground and used a Taser on him, but police say he refused to comply and continued to fight.

The suspect was finally subdued after several other officers responded to the scene. The stolen cellphone was recovered and the suspect was taken into custody.

The officers were not injured.

Jedidiah Fortune, 28, faces charges of resisting arrest, obstruction, possession of stolen property, attempting to disarm a police officer, uttering threats, two counts of assaulting a police officer and four counts of breaching a previously imposed court order.

Fortune was held in custody overnight and will appear in Halifax provincial court Tuesday.
