A man and child were being treated for hypothermia Friday night after falling off an ATV and being submerged in water.

Halifax RCMP say they were called to the Salt Marsh Trail near Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia after two people found the victims, a 21-year-old man and a nine-year-old boy.

Police say the pair were four wheeling through a brook, but lost traction when the water became too deep.

The pair spent several minutes in the cold water before swimming back to shore.

They were taken to the Dartmouth General hospital for treatment.
