A 19-year-old Halifax man is facing impaired driving charges in connection with a pair of crashes that knocked out power to thousands of customers in the city.

Police say a vehicle struck a power pole on Beaufort Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday but kept going.

A second power pole was hit a short distance away at the corner of Oxford and South streets.

Police say six people were in the vehicle.

Paramedics did assessments on the scene and no one was taken to hospital.

At one point, more than 4,600 homes and businesses were without electricity.

Power was restored around 8 a.m.

The driver is facing impaired driving charges. He is due to appear in court at a later date.
