Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a man who was arrested for public intoxication was found dead in his Halifax jail cell.

Police say the man was arrested in Halifax around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and taken into custody at Halifax Regional Police headquarters on Gottingen Street.

Staff were conducting a routine check shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday when they found the man unresponsive in his cell.

Police say paramedics responded to the scene and determined the man had died.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.

The man’s identity has not been released.

The Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, is taking over the investigation.
