ST. STEPHEN, N.B. -- A man who was apprehended by police as he tried to swim from Maine to New Brunswick has pleaded guilty to weapons and immigration offences.

The Canadian Border Services Agency says Jordan Nathaniel Richard Paul, an American citizen, had brass knuckles and pepper spray on him when he was plucked from the St. Croix River.

Police say he was trying to evade border agents as he went from Calais, Me., to St. Stephen, N.B., last Saturday.

He was charged under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for not going through a proper examination upon entering Canada.

Police say Paul is also the subject of two outstanding warrants by New Brunswick police in Miramichi and Fredericton.

He pleaded guilty to all charges in St. Stephen provincial court and was sentenced to 60 days in jail, fined and banned from owning weapons for 10 years.
