The RCMP say a man was taken to hospital after he collapsed on the ice of the St. John River.

Police received a call around 11:30 a.m. Saturday that a man had wandered onto the frozen river, where he collapsed and was unresponsive.

Police managed to pull the man off the ice and provided First Aid. Officers worked with members of Ambulance New Brunswick and the Victoria County Fire Department to bring the man up the steep embankment and get him to safety.

The 45-year-old Tobique First Nation man was taken to the Perth-Andover Hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia.
