A group in southern New Brunswick is distributing hats, scarves, and mittens to those in need in a unique way.

The initiative is called ‘Colour The City With Warmth.’ Jessica LeBlanc and her mother Betty Russell got the idea online.

“The craft community would get together and they would wrap things around trees and I always thought that was a great idea, but then I saw them doing it for the homeless and we just figured, hey lets do it and it just snowballed from there,” says LeBlanc.

LeBlanc and Russell put out the request for donations earlier this month and have been overwhelmed by the show of support.

“We have jackets, mitts, scarves, gloves, slippers, boots pretty much anything that's going to keep someone warm,” says LeBlanc.

Russell says even the donation of one item can make a big difference.

“Think of it, it's going to make somebody happy and it's going to warm your heart and it's going to warm their hands, or their neck or things like that,” says Russell. “As long as it's in good condition and somebody could use it.”

Const. Krystal Daley is with the Kennebecasis Police. The department will be among the many who will be handing out some of the donated items.

“Any time someone tries to better someone's life is always encouraged with any police department,” says Daley.

“I do see a lot of kids in the schools, we've got four right now and a new French school and there are kids out there still on the playground with no mittens, and no hats and no scarfs, some of them don't have boots or proper winter jackets.”

Some of the donations will be left around town for whoever is in need, while others will be handed out by the mother, daughter duo.
