After retiring from a career in the airline industries, Betty Fader moved back home to Halifax’s North End.

In August 2014, Betty contacted the principal at the elementary school she attended as a child, looking to combine her passion for cooking with helping others.

“Ms. Betty is our angel,” says Principal Makiko Chiasson. “I first met her last august, she came into my office and said, 'can I cook for you?' and I said 'yes please.' She has been here ever since.”

For the second year, Betty is whipping up hot lunches for the staff and students at Halifax’s St. Stephen's Elementary School. From shepherd’s pie, to soup, Betty doesn't leave before every mouth is fed.

“She's like, nice and sweet, just like her food,” says Grade 6 student Scquoia Thoms.

“She always makes food for us and it's really nice. I get it every time, it's really good,” says Grade 6 student Charlotte Wood.

While she is busy filling children’s bellies, Betty says sharing her food keeps her fulfilled.

“I love interacting with the kids, they're so sweet, they're a great bunch of kids up here,” says Betty.

Not only are her lunches delicious, staff say Betty is an excellent role model for the students.

“I think the students really understand that being a volunteer is such an important role in our society,” says Makiko.
