Nova Scotia artist Dan Munro has been painting for more than 30 years. His pieces of art have always been popular in the local community, prized for their rich colours and fine detail.

Over the years, Dan has donated hundreds of paintings, helping to raise thousands of dollars for groups and organizations.

“All you have to do is look at some of these works over here and you know that he's the van Gogh of Pictou County,” says Dave Leese, founder of Lansdowne Outdoor Recreation Park.

Dan says donating his art is part of his personal philosophy.

“I just feel that donating is part of passing things forward,” says Dan. “Passing things forwards and seeing that things continue on.”

Dan recently retired after three decades of teaching art classes and workshops and his students paint a picture of a wonderful teacher.

“He is amazing,” says Mary Fleury, former student. “He has a lot of patience. Very good, very kind with all the students, treats everyone the same.”

“Confidence is one of the things he helps all of the people with. You know, he just does give you the confidence,” says Sharon Parker, former student. “He can get right through to the part that you've done well and you've done right and make you feel like you should carry on.”

The reason for Dan's generosity is best summed up by the artist himself.

“I believe in giving back and I think it comes back ten times over.”

Congratulations to Dan Munro, our Maritimer of the Week.
